Join Hispanic Leaders to Demand Protections for Long-Term Immigrants

Like our community, the signatories of this letter span the political spectrum. We may be MAGA, we may be progressives, we may be somewhere in between. We are all united in demanding that both Republicans and Democrats in Washington deliver solutions that allow long-term undocumented immigrants, many of whom have worked, paid taxes, and contributed to our communities, families and workplaces for decades, long-term solutions that allow them to live and work legally without fear.

We cannot wait. In July, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an undocumented long-term immigrant and father of three with no criminal record who had lived in the U.S. for decades and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a young father with a legal work permit, were killed by ICE officers in Houston, Texas and Biddeford, Maine within a week of each other.  DACA holders are being pushed out of status by unprecedented delays in renewals; TPS holders are losing their status; Dreamers and other long-term immigrants are vulnerable to harsh enforcement and deportation.

The numbers speak for themselves – polling shows that the American public overwhelmingly supports solutions for these long-term immigrants including 78% of Republican voters, 83% of voters overall, and 85% of Hispanic voters. Latino-owned businesses create an economic output of $2.8 trillion and represent a substantial portion of the economic landscape. According to the Latino Donor Collaborative, the U.S. Latino economy reached $4 trillion in 2023, making it the 5th largest economy in the world if it were a country – larger than the U.K. and France.

The numbers also show something else – Hispanic Americans will determine the outcome of the 2026 midterms. A report showed that a 10 point shift in the Hispanic vote on its own can flip the House majority. We have already seen far greater shifts in special elections over the past year. .

The Hispanic vote is won with respect. Respect for our community means fighting for and delivering these long-overdue protections for long-term immigrants. We need action now, from this administration and from leaders in Congress.
