WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston father and longtime immigrant who had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years, Comité de 100 issued the following statement:

“Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a good man who had lived in this country for almost 35 years. A family man and father of three U.S. citizen children, he reminds me of my own father, who was also an immigrant from Mexico. Lorenzo contributed to this country. He worked hard every day supporting his family and uplifting our community here in Houston. He should have had the opportunity to freely pursue the American Dream. Instead, he faced horrific and unjustifiable profiling and murder.
“I can only imagine my pain if my father had been targeted this way. Our national soul is at stake. We must ensure immediate accountability for Mr. Salgado Araujo’s killing, put an end to this inexcusable mistreatment of immigrants in our country, and institute reforms that shield immigrants like Lorenzo so they can live and work legally without fear of persecution.”
